Masterclass Format

This VIRTUAL Masterclass will be delivered by IBICUS via ZOOM by a fully-trained leader. The timings are 09:00-13:30 UK time with a set-up / introductory meeting starting at 08:30 UK time.  Please note that IBICUS Masterclasses are not official IB PD workshops are any certificates issues do not count towards school authorisation and evaluation.

About the Masterclass

This masterclass provides a forum for both new and experienced Theory of Knowledge teachers and coordinators to explore the demands of the TOK essay and develop a deeper understanding of how the prescribed titles can be unpacked, interpreted and approached.

Throughout the masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the TOK essay titles, consider the implications of different interpretations and explore the ways in which a title can shape the direction of an essay. Participants will be encouraged to contribute their own ideas, perspectives and examples, creating opportunities to learn from the experience and approaches of colleagues.

This masterclass is recommended for all TOK teachers who are teaching or preparing to teach the Theory of Knowledge course and for IB DP teachers who are keen to strengthen the teaching and learning experience in their DP classroom by:

  • developing a deeper understanding of the demands and possibilities of the TOK essay titles
  • exploring different ways of unpacking and interpreting prescribed titles
  • considering how interpretations of a title can influence the development of an essay
  • sharing and evaluating real-world examples and ideas that could be used to explore different titles
  • collaborating with colleagues to develop approaches and strategies for supporting students with the TOK essay

As a participant you will have the opportunity to:

  • develop greater confidence in unpacking and interpreting TOK essay titles
  • explore a range of possible approaches to different prescribed titles
  • broaden your repertoire of examples and perspectives for working with TOK essay titles
  • engage in professional dialogue and learn from the ideas and experiences of other TOK teachers
  • develop practical strategies for helping students move from understanding a title to developing a focused and well-supported essay
