About the Masterclass

How concept-based is your school today? Should we throw out knowledge-based learning in favour of big, fluffy ideals? Conceptual understanding is at the heart of IB pedagogy, yet 'concept-based learning' can often feel abstract or vague. Join us for this masterclass as we establish a clear, shared understanding of what concepts truly are, and examine common pitfalls and misconceptions in concept-driven classrooms. We will discuss the vital relationship between rich content, core knowledge, and conceptual thinking, ensuring rigor is never sacrificed for abstraction. Finally, participants will explore practical ideas and frameworks for designing impactful in-school PD that moves students beyond fact recall toward transferable, deep understanding. Essential for learning leaders, subject heads, and educators aiming to make conceptual teaching concrete and actionable across all disciplines.
