About the Masterclass

The five prescribed themes are not five vocabulary lists. They are contexts through which learners explore ideas, encounter perspectives and develop the language needed for purposeful communication.

This masterclass shows how identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet can become coherent pathways for language development. Participants will design conceptual questions, select authentic Arabic texts and build sequences that connect receptive, productive and interactive work. The session focuses on avoiding repetitive topic units, representing diverse Arabic-speaking contexts, revisiting language in increasingly demanding ways and differentiating expectations for SL and HL learners.

Participants will

  • Turn broad prescribed themes into focused conceptual inquiries and communicative purposes.
  • Select authentic texts that represent varied Arabic-speaking contexts and perspectives.
  • Connect vocabulary and grammar development to meaning rather than isolated coverage.
  • Build purposeful movement between listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing.
  • Differentiate thematic learning and text demand for SL and HL learners.

Practical outcomes

  • A thematic unit frame with inquiry questions, texts, language goals and performance tasks.
  • A resource-selection checklist for authenticity, accessibility and cultural breadth.
  • A course map showing progression and productive connections across the five themes.
