About the workshop

PLEASE NOTE:  This workshop focusses on the existing curriculum.  The curriculum change originally scheduled for 2020-21 will now take place in Spring 2023.  New curriculum workshops for this subject will be available from April 2023.

This workshop is recommended for experienced Diploma Programme (DP) biology teachers and those who have recently completed a category 1 workshop.

Practical work is an important feature of the DP biology course. This workshop supports you in the development of a balanced and practical scheme of work that provides opportunities to assess students using the sciences subject group internal assessment criteria. You will examine various student samples to develop a clear understanding of the application of the internal assessment criteria and the moderation process. Ways in which teachers can scaffold teaching and learning to prepare students for internal assessment will also be explored. The workshop is suitable for experienced teachers who wish to improve their practical schemes of work as well as teachers new to teaching biology in the DP.

This workshop will focus on the common concerns of experienced IB Biology teachers in the management of execution of successful individual investigations:

Time management of the II; The assessment criteria; The types of investigation in relation to the criteria; Formative assessment and the PSOW; Deriving research questions; Data processing and statistics; Compiling the written report; Moderating exemplars; Annotating scripts; Advising upon the draft; Ethical and safety guidelines

There will also be time devoted to the curriculum review suggestions for the 2022 Guide, the Extended Essay and preparation of pupils for the external examination
